A review of our year of travel

Posted by on in European Travel

2016 has been a year full of travel for me and my family; looking back now I realise we've been away every school holiday and even managed some weekend breaks in between.  It's involved all sorts of different configurations including solo trips for three out of four of us, a child-free break with my parents, a full-on child-centered school trip to Barcelona for me and 55 kids (of whom one was my own), a boys' weekend and several family holidays.  We've flown long haul for the first time in a very long time, taken another of our beloved European road trips, camped, rented a luxury penthouse apartment, stayed in a youth hostel, stayed in an ecolodge and a bamboo shack on stilts over water.  We've stayed in the dodgiest Airbnb room I've come across yet and some very ordinary hotels, but we've also blissed out in a 5 star spa resort and been hosted in style by old friends. We've explored new countries, new regions of France and old haunts.  From a travel point of view it's been an amazing year.  It's going to be hard to live up to in 2017!

24 hours in Hanoi

Posted by on in World Travel

It’s 4 pm and you’ve arrived in Hanoi for a 24 hour visit.  You’re staying in the middle of the Old Town, in the midst of the chaotic, noisy, vibrant heart of the city and you’ve just checked into your hotel.  You’ve only got 24 hours here, so it’s time to hit the streets, no time to waste.  Make sure you’ve got comfortable shoes, the address of your hotel, a map and a fully charged battery in your camera because you’re going to cover some miles, undoubtedly get lost, and certainly take hundreds of photos.

16 days in Vietnam

Posted by on in World Travel

Since we returned from our trip to Vietnam I’ve been asked over and again to write down our itinerary as friends who followed along on Facebook were impressed by how much we managed to see in just over 2 weeks and others just want to know where we went.  I won’t go into how we felt returning after 20 years or what the kids felt about their first experience of Asia, nor any reflections or descriptions here, just the basics of our itinerary (with the odd adjective thrown in for good measure).  So here it is:  16 days of family travel in Vietnam.
