What is a bûche de Noël?

Posted by on in French Culture & Traditions

The Christmas meal in France, eaten on the evening of the 24th of December, wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t end with a delicious dessert of bûche de Noël, but what exactly is a bûche de Noël?  Literally translated bûche de Noël means Christmas log, and nowadays it comes in the form of a cake shaped more or less like a log.  Its origins however come from a real wooden log.bûche noël esther

January is the month of la galette in France.  La galette des rois, or King's Cake, a flaky buttery pastry filled with almond paste, is traditionally eaten at Epiphany on 6th January, but in reality it's eaten throughout the month at social gatherings, schools, offices, New Year ceremonies and so on. As today is Epiphany I thought I'd share with you just how easy it is to make your own galette des rois.  For details on the traditions that surround the eating of the cake take a look at this post I wrote a while back.

Birthday parties in France - and what not to do

Posted by on in Children/Family

I was drinking my coffee this morning in a reflective mood remembering this day 16 years ago when I hoped my first baby would be born; the date was 9.9.99 and I liked it as a birth date.  Baby had other ideas however and finally made it into the world a couple of hours into the 10th.  While ruminating on this momentous event and beginning to get all nostalgic I noticed a call out for posts about children's birthday parties around the world from a blogging group I belong to.  And so blogging inspiration struck and the nostalgia became constructive.
