I had to Google this after reading Michaela's comment...a powerful memorial.

  • Guest
    Phoebe Sunday, 04 May 2014

Michaela recognised it, I didn't want to let people know too soon what it was as it's interesting seeing comments when people don't know what it is. You're right, it is very powerful. There are even children's shoes whch makes it even sadder.

Not lives lost at sea, though good guess. It's a memorial to Jewish victims who were shot in to the Danube during WWII

The shoes do look very real, but they're made out of rusty iron (60 pairs in total) and the story is not a happy one.

  • Guest
    Jacq Sunday, 04 May 2014

    Eh? What's that all about?

  • Guest
    Phoebe Sunday, 04 May 2014

See explanation above Jacq. It's a memorial to victims killed in WWII in Budapest.

Is this in commemoration of something?

  • Guest
    Phoebe Sunday, 04 May 2014

Yes it is Linda, it's a memorial to Budapest Jews who were rounded up and shot into the Danube in 1944-45, having been made to take off their shoes first.
