Matisse in Nice

To celebrate 50 years of the Matisse Museum in Nice, the city of Nice is currently holding 8 separate exhibitions dedicated to this master of modern art.  I had hoped to have visited some of them already as they've been going since 21 June but this last month has been so hectic I haven't had the time.  I will definitely go when we return from our holidays in late August and I will be reporting back here.

                   été de matisse

Matisse had a long relationship with Nice, spending nearly half the year every year there from 1921 until his death in 1954.  He is buried in the cemetary of Cimiez, an attractive suburb north of the city. One of his most well-known legacies locally is his work in the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, where he designed the interior, the stained glass windows and the decorations.  This lovely chapel is open to the public, but unfortunately you can't take photos.

The 8 venues participating in Nice 2013 un été pour Matisse and the names of their exhibitions are as follows: the Musée Matisse, "Matisse. Music at work", the Musée d'Archéologie, "On swimming pools", the Théâtre de la Photographie et de l'Image (TPI), "Women, muses and models (Encounters between the collection of Amedeo M. Turello and the work of Matisse)", the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (MAMAC), "Hello Mr Matisse! Encounters(s)", the Palais Lascaris, "Matisse. The Jazz years", the Galerie des Ponchettes, "Matisse in posters", the Musée Masséna, "Palm trees, palms and palmettes" and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, "Gustave Moreau, Matisse's Master".  In total over 700 works of art comprising paintings, sculptures and photos are on display, on loan from Paris, Versailles, Washington, New York and private collections.  It's the cultural event of the year on the Côte d'Azur and I can't wait to indulge myself in several sessions later this summer.
